THE STATE OF BRITAIN’S HEDGEHOGS 2022

Summary:

  • Hedgehogs in Britain have undergone a long historic decline, but differences between urban and rural populations are increasingly apparent.

  • In urban areas, the picture is of a stable population showing signs of recovery. This highlights the importance of gardens and green spaces, and local action by people like you.

  • In stark contrast, rural populations remain low. In the last two decades, numbers have continued to decline by between a third and three-quarters nationally. The largest declines are seen in the eastern half of England.

The State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, published by People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

THE STATE OF BRITAIN’S HEDGEHOGS 2018

In 2015, The State of Britain’s Hedgehogs, by People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), outlined the findings of four surveys recording hedgehogs in urban and rural areas, and showed a worrying decline.

THE STATE OF BRITAIN’S HEDGEHOGS 2015

This report updates the findings from 2011, analysing data from four surveys between 2000 and 2014. The picture suggests a continuing decline, in both rural and urban landscapes. Since 2000, rural populations have declined by at least a half and urban populations by up to a third in the same period.

THE STATE OF BRITAIN’S HEDGEHOGS 2011

There has never been a national census of hedgehog numbers, but several on-going surveys have collected data on their relative abundance nationally since 1996. Preliminary data from two surveys run by People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) over the past decade indicated an alarming fall in the numbers of hedgehogs in urban and rural areas. Now, a report by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) commissioned by PTES and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to determine the state of Britain's hedgehogs, indicates that at a conservative estimate a quarter of the population has been lost in the last ten years.

I'll shortly link in a pdf document "How to Guide" as well along with material items you'll need and tools. These are very very solid hedgehog houses which will last for years! --------------------------------------------------------------------- HORNBEAM WOOD HEDGEHOG SANCTUARY 🦔🐾🐾🐾🐾: A family run Charity that looks after European Wild Hedgehogs. The Wild British Hedgehog has been included in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List for British Mammals. Their population has decreased by about 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas since the year 2000. As of 2020, it is estimated (PTES) that up to 335k hedgehogs are killed each year on the roads. Their habitats have been diminishing and their inability to access and travel though gardens and across roads has become in most cases, impossible. Roads create invisible barriers and also physical barriers for hedgehogs. The use of poisons like slug pellets, and intensive agricultural farming also have a part to play in their decreased populations though the loss of hedges and pesticides. --------------------------------------------------------------------- #hedgehog #cam #hoglets #wild #ukmammals #hwhs #hedgehogsanctuary #harpenden #hertfordshire #charity
