Wheathampstead to become an exemplar hedgehog friendly village!

Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary has successfully been awarded a very generous £438 grant from Wheathampstead Parish Council (http://wheathampstead-pc.gov.uk/) to be used to help Wheathampstead become an exemplar hedgehog friendly village!

Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary will soon be running a competition for local children in Wheathampstead to design a poster for placing on windows, doors, fences or gates that can be used to highlight a hedgehog friendly garden or area.

Wheathampstead to become an exemplar for a hedgehog friendly village!

The grant will be used for the professional printing of materials to support our work and enhance our community engagement. We host a large number of community events every year to encourage understanding and participation in the protection and preservation of our local hedgehog population. Our events focus on education and awareness raising - they are very popular and we get excellent feedback. We are keen to enhance these further by providing information materials that can be taken away so that our participants can subsequently help hedgehogs in their gardens and the wider community.

We plan to develop audience specific information leaflets (targeted by age) that can be used after our events to advise on action that can be taken at home, providing opportunities for families and groups to subsequently work together on a wildlife project to benefit hedgehogs.

Our volunteers are designing the leaflets. To meet demand for events arranged for this year we plan to print 2,000 copies. Aligned with this we will be running a competition for local children in Wheathampstead to design a poster for placing on windows, doors, fences or gates that can be used to highlight a hedgehog friendly garden or area. This is intended to support our longer term goal of making Wheathampstead an exemplar for a hedgehog friendly village by encouraging wide participation. We plan to run the competition this year with the posters being available around October/November time. We anticipate that most of our distribution of the posters will not be until April 2022 onwards when hedgehogs come out of hibernation and when our outdoor events commence again. Funding to cover the costs of printing 500 weatherproof leaflets.

We would like to thank Wheathampstead Parish Council for their support.
