Meet The Craft Ladies

An industrious group of ladies, meet weekly, to provide the Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary with a variety of wonderful handmade craft items. These unassuming ladies: Irene, Laura, Frances, Catherine, and Gilly are guided by Harriet (Bluebell Craft), with further numerous handmade contributions sent by Frances (Friz Knits) too.

Their weekly crafting sessions are very productive but more so, friendly, fun, and sociable occasions that they thoroughly enjoy. “It’s more like therapy!” laughs Laura. “We have such a laugh,” agrees Harriet, “You never know what you will make, one week to the next.”

Hedgehog Inspiration

The inspiration for the craft items that they make, comes from many sources; creativity is often sparked from each other and sharing ideas. Or by seeing similar objects which can be made with the hedgehogs in mind.

As a group, they produce many hedgehog-related things such as, crocheted hedgehogs, in all shapes and sizes. From keyrings, pencil toppers, brooches and hanging decorations, to knitted hedgehogs and handmade cards for birthdays and celebrations. They even have seasonal gifts such as Christmas themed gifts and even a Valentine inspired crocheted Hedgehog.

Harriet (Bluebell Craft) also makes accredited hand soaps in adorable hedgehog shapes and handy guest soaps which are all donated to HWHS and for sale in the Gift Shop Website

You will be amazed at the variety of gifts for sale in HWHS website – please look for yourself! https://www.hornbeamwood.org.uk/hedgehog-craft-gifts

Importantly, all the craft items that the ladies make are donated to HWHS charity for free so that one hundred percent of the revenue goes directly to the Sanctuary and the care of the hedgehogs. Commendably, every lady volunteers their time, every week, for free!

Events – HWHS Stall

In addition to making craft gifts, Harriet organises ladies to volunteer their time to run a HWHS stall at local events, such as summer fairs, village fairs and local events, where their handmade items are for sale from April to Christmas time. Again, volunteers’ contributing their valuable time for free on behalf of the HWHS charity. Keep an eye out for HWHS stall at the next local event and come and meet the ladies and buy a hedgehog!

Donations of crafting items

Since all the handmade hedgehog gifts are donated by the ladies for free, if you have any crafting items left over from a project or unwanted wool or yarn, beads, or blank cards, please feel free to donate items to the sanctuary.

Any donations may be left at Total Looks, 71A High Street, Harpenden, AL5 2SL. They are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

HWHS would like to say a huge thank you to all the ladies that make gifts, crochet or knit for the charity and to those that volunteer their time selling these items at events.
