A FAMILY RUN REGISTERED CHARITY WITH 100% OF DONATIONS GOING TO HELP THE HEDGEHOGS.

British Wild Hedgehogs are on the red list of endangered species with nearly 50% of their population decreased over the past decade in rural areas and a third from towns and cities.

We are a small family run Registered Charity that helps rehabilitate wild hedgehogs. You can support us with donations, gifts, fundraising, sponsorship, partnerships, or legacies. We would appreciate your support even if it's helping to raise awareness and telling others about us and letting them know what we do to help the hedgehogs.

PLEASE HELP SUPPORT US

There are many items we are always in need of such as cat (not fish) or dog jelly-based food, clean towels, newspapers, small plastic (not fabric) animal carriers, old rabbit hutches, black or clear large bin rubbish bags, or large plastic tubs with clip-on lids.

We currently have a peak of around 80 hedgehogs at any one time and an average of between 30-90 in rehabilitation.  Hedgehogs in rehabilitation are with us anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months but normally at least 1-2 months.  One hedgehog can easily eat close to an entire can of dog food, but it's normally just over half a can or a large bowl of hedgehog food. It's not unusual to go through at least 30-40 cans of food a day. This does not include the more expensive foods such as the critical care mousse and hoglet powdered food.

Donations are greatly appreciated and help us a huge amount. There are a lot of ongoing costs involved in rescuing the hedgehogs, but it costs about £20 a month just to feed and shelter a hedgehog in rehabilitation.

Some of the larger costs for the Charity are insurance and electricity along with the ongoing running costs of the rescue vehicle used to pick up and drop off hedgehogs on rescue and once released back into the wild. The cost of fuel is more than £50 a week. These costs alone amount to several thousand pounds a year. There are also hedgehog consumable costs (such as medical treatments, gloves, various disinfectants, wound sprays, flea, mite, and tick sprays, Milton tablets, etc.) and general maintenance and repairs to hedgehog buildings, hutches, and pens.  On top of this are expensive items such as incubators.

Founded in April 2015 and rescuing wildlife since the 1980s. The Charity rehabilitates Wild Hedgehogs which are sick, injured, underweight, or need help. Over the last six years we have rescued, rehabilitated, and released over 1000 injured or orphaned hedgehogs. Over 300 Hedgehogs were released back in to the wild in 2021. The Wild British Hedgehog has been included in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List for British Mammals. Their population has decreased by about 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas since the year 2000. As of 2020, it is estimated (PTES) that up to 335k hedgehogs are killed each year on the roads. Their habitats have been diminishing and their inability to access and travel though gardens and across roads has become in most cases, impossible. Roads create invisible barriers and also physical barriers for hedgehogs. The use of poisons like slug pellets, and intensive agricultural farming also have a part to play in their decreased populations though the loss of hedges and pesticides. --------------------------------------------------------------------- #hedgehog #cam #hoglets #wild #ukmammals #hwhs #hedgehogsanctuary #harpenden #hertfordshire #charity

Big release day for Rise, Prickle, and Helen#2! - Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary

Big release day for Rise, Prickle, and Helen#2! These three hedgehogs came in from a rescue Oct 2022 as orphaned hoglets each around 150g. At that weight during the winter season they would not have made it through hibernation. Prickle was overwintered at the sanctuary with Rise and Helen#2 being kindly overwintered by Lauren (one of our volunteers). They were released at weights of 700-820g so all ready for the adventures ahead :) A big thank you to Helen Qunet for calling in the rescues late 2022. Poor hedgehog rescued after being found entangled in netting - Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary

This poor hedgehog is from Redbourn and was rescued after being found entangled in netting. The people who called in the rescue did a great job at removing most of the netting after becoming trapped and stuck. We removed the rest which was entangled under the hedgehogs body. A successful rescue and was released soon after back in to the wild :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- HORNBEAM WOOD HEDGEHOG SANCTUARY 🦔🐾🐾: The Charity is a family run operation with help from the local community with mother and son are involved on a daily basis. HELP THE HEDGEHOGS THROUGH BUSINESS SPONSORSHIP

If you have a local business that would like to help a local charity through sponsorship, we would love to hear from you. We have a lot of ongoing operational costs just to keep the Charity functioning and sponsorship of these services would help a huge amount.

If your business is involved in construction and development of houses, we would be keen to talk about ways you could help the hedgehogs. We also have ongoing projects at the sanctuary and upkeep of the building which are used for the hedgehogs, if you might be able to help with material costs such as wood, roofing, or groundwork please get in touch with us.

You might also like to help us with hedgehog information leaflets that we hand out during awareness events and visits.  If you have a business that would like to help us by paying for the printing of these leaflets, that would be amazing.  Your brand would of course also be printed with thanks.

"What a lovely sanctuary in a stunning setting dedicated to sick, injured and baby wild hedgehogs. I attended a very interesting talk by Martin who was very knowledgeable and who so kindly dedicates his time helping our beautiful endangered hedgehogs. If you can please donate and support this wonderful charity."
